Your race adds two or three fixed traits to every run. The picks below come from reading those traits against each class’s health and description. They are our reasoning, not measured results.

Three kinds of race

  • Damage: Orc (Blood Fury, +35% damage for 12 seconds every 40), Human (Perception, +15% for 10 seconds every 30) and Dwarf (a flat +6%). If Blood Fury fired on cooldown in a fight that never stopped, it would average about 10.5% more damage, and Perception about 5%. That is arithmetic on the trait text, not a measurement.
  • Survival: Undead and Night Elf give a few seconds of immunity near death. Tauren adds 15% max health, and Orc adds 10%. Troll heals 1.5 health per second.
  • Control and tempo: Tauren stuns nearby enemies, Gnome roots them and shortens cooldowns, and Troll’s Berserking speeds cooldowns up.

Human also gives +10% experience and +20% gold. That makes it a sound all-round choice when you are learning a class.

Our pick for each class

Suggested races: reasoning from trait text, not tested
ClassPickAlternativeWhyRaces open in WoW 1.12
Warrior
230 health
TaurenOrcThe Warrior fights in the middle of the pack. War Stomp stuns the enemies around you every 15 seconds, and Endurance adds 15% to an already high health pool. Orc trades the stun for more damage.Human, Orc, Dwarf, Night Elf, Undead, Tauren, Gnome, Troll
Paladin
245 health
DwarfHumanThe Paladin already heals itself and survives a killing blow now and then, so a second cheat-death race adds less. Stoneform’s shield is 30% of max health, and the Paladin has the most health of any class. Gun Specialization adds a flat 6% damage. Human is the alternative: Perception adds burst damage, and The Human Spirit adds 10% experience.Human, Dwarf
Hunter
240 health
Night ElfOrcThe Hunter’s record says it works “as long as you keep your distance”. Quickness adds 8% movement speed for that, and Shadowmeld covers a mistake. Orc adds burst damage instead.Orc, Dwarf, Night Elf, Tauren, Troll
Rogue
190 health
UndeadTrollThe Rogue is described as fast and fragile, and it fights in melee. Will of the Forsaken gives the longest near-death immunity, 4 seconds, on the shortest cooldown, 60 seconds. Troll suits a crit-focused Rogue: Throwing Specialization adds 3% critical strike.Human, Orc, Dwarf, Night Elf, Undead, Gnome, Troll
Priest
170 health
UndeadTrollThe Priest has the second-lowest base health. Will of the Forsaken and Cannibalize both help a low pool. Troll suits a Priest who relies on Power Word: Shield and other cooldowns: Berserking speeds them up for 10 seconds, and Regeneration heals steadily.Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Undead, Troll
Shaman
195 health
TrollTaurenShaman damage comes from repeated casts and totems. Berserking makes cooldowns recover 30% faster for 10 seconds, and Regeneration heals steadily. Tauren is the sturdier option: +15% health and a stun every 15 seconds.Orc, Tauren, Troll
Mage
215 health
GnomeUndeadThe Mage is the “glass cannon” with “nothing to hide behind”. Escape Artist roots nearby enemies every 20 seconds, which gives you room to cast, and Expansive Mind shortens cooldowns. Undead trades that for a near-death immunity and a heal on every kill.Human, Undead, Gnome, Troll
Warlock
165 health
UndeadGnomeThe Warlock has the lowest base health and stacks damage over time on “everything that chases you”. Will of the Forsaken gives the longest near-death immunity, and Cannibalize heals on every kill while those effects work. Gnome’s Escape Artist roots the chasers instead.Human, Orc, Undead, Gnome
Druid
205 health
TaurenNight ElfThe Druid already roots enemies and heals itself. War Stomp adds a second way to stop a crowd, and Endurance adds 15% health. Night Elf is the mobile alternative.Night Elf, Tauren

Check what your class can use

Choose race in the Armory. The game has a “Not open to the [class]” label and appears to follow WoW 1.12 race and class rules, which the table uses. We could not read the game’s own table and have not checked every pairing in its picker. If your pick is not offered, take the alternative.

For the class choice itself, see the class tier list. For a full build, read the class pages.

Questions

What is the best race in Azeroth Survivors?

No race is best for every class. Orc gives the most burst damage, Undead and Night Elf give near-death immunity, and Human gives extra experience and gold. Our per-class picks are reasoning from the trait text, not measured.

What race should a Mage be?

We suggest Gnome. Escape Artist roots nearby enemies every 20 seconds and Expansive Mind cuts cooldowns by 8%. Undead is the alternative.

What race should a Warrior be?

We suggest Tauren for War Stomp and +15% health while fighting in melee. Orc is the damage-first alternative.

Do racial abilities need a key?

No. The hero picker says racials cast on their own.

Can every class use every race?

No. The game has a “Not open to the [class]” label and appears to follow WoW 1.12 rules: a Paladin can only be Human or Dwarf, and a Druid only Night Elf or Tauren. We have not checked every pairing in the game’s picker.

Sources & scope

Race traits, class health and class descriptions are from the original game’s v0.103.1 (671c6f5e) data; the trait text matched the v0.103.1 (671c6f5e) client on 20 October 2026. The picks are our reasoning from that text. The race and class pairs follow WoW 1.12 rules; we could not read the game’s own table and have not checked every pairing in its picker. We did not measure damage or survival for any pair.
