Quick summary: spend 15 points in Discipline for Divine Aegis and 31 in Shadow, keep Shadow Word: Pain, Mind Blast and Psychic Scream, and level whichever of the three offers the best card. Banish Mind Flay and Devouring Plague. For high Heroic levels, switch to the tankier Shadow Weaving setup.

Be honest with yourself about the class: players agree the Priest is slow and low on damage, but it clears reliably. The evidence here is thinner than for other classes.

Talent points: 15 Discipline / 31 Shadow

Holdherhand’s 23 October Mind Blast guide takes 15 Discipline and 31 Shadow, and does not say where the other 5 points go. Apo’s build page (29 October) spends 19 / 0 / 32. Tree totals only; the milestones are:

  • Divine Aegis (Discipline, 10 points): you start every run with Power Word: Shield, and the shield bursts in holy light when it breaks. Nearly every Priest build takes it.
  • Shadowy Apparitions (Shadow, 20 points): you start with Shadow Word: Pain instead of Smite, and its ticks can loose a free Mind Blast.
  • Shadowform (Shadow capstone): enemies that die with Shadow Word: Pain burst and spread it.
  • Shadow Weaving (Shadow, 10 points): Shadow spells also hit for a share of the target’s maximum health. The tank route leans on it.

Spells to keep and banish

Holdherhand takes Mind Blast, Mind Flay, Psychic Scream and Devouring Plague, then banishes Devouring Plague, Mind Flay and Power Word: Shield. That leaves Shadow Word: Pain, Mind Blast and Psychic Scream. Apo keeps Power Word: Shield as well. Do not banish a spell while a legendary card for it is on offer (Apo).

Upgrade priority

  • The best card among the three. Level whichever of Shadow Word: Pain, Mind Blast or Psychic Scream comes with the highest quality.
  • Keep single-target damage. Holdherhand says a pure damage-over-time build leaves bosses taking literal minutes; add Mind Blast ranks.
  • Psychic Scream to about 2.1–2.5 seconds. With enough range, the fear lock lets you nearly stand still. Yion thinks pushing below 2 seconds is probably a mistake, though most of his runs ended below 1.5 seconds and were still fine.
  • Stop area upgrades at room size. Holdherhand says area tops out around 45–50 yards.
  • Luck first, then critical chance. Apo raises critical chance past 50% before critical damage.

Rings, trinkets and amulet

Rings: Quick Strike Ring and Master Dragonslayer’s Ring; Seal of the Damned for damage-over-time builds. Trinkets: Mark of the Chosen with Blackhand’s Breadth or Hand of Justice. Necklace: players rank a Mind Blast legendary above a Shadow Word: Pain one and name them Eye of the Splitting Sky and Pendant of the Plague; both are player-reported and not in our data extract. Fallbacks are Onyxia Tooth Pendant, Choker of Enlightenment, Malice Stone Pendant and The Eye of Hakkar. DuBariLow levels the Kelp luck necklace only to rank 3.

How to play the run

The first minutes are slow: there is little area damage until Shadow Word: Pain and Psychic Scream have ranks. Kite and backpedal. Once Psychic Scream fears everything nearby, you can hold a corner and move only for elites or boss charges. On high Heroic, casters one-shot Priests around minute 16, so keep health, damage reduction and your shield ahead of big damage numbers (Yion).

Alternative: Shadow Weaving tank

Apo says the Mind Blast build works to Heroic II but needed a tankier build for Heroic III–V. Yion’s Heroic build (29 October) spends 30 Discipline / 21 Shadow and keeps Mind Blast, Shadow Word: Pain, Power Word: Shield and Psychic Scream. It is slow but safe and made solo Heroic progress. DuBariLow’s Endless fear build (25 October) spends 19 / 0 / 32 and upgrades targets, then duration, then damage, then cooldown on its damage over time. Holdherhand’s 26 October video and build page use the same fear lock to last long Endless runs, with Quick Strike Ring, Heavy Dark Iron Ring, Star of Mystaria and Mark of the Chosen. Yion also cites a PvP set bonus; that bonus is player-reported.

Holy, with Chastise turning Smite crits into free Holy Novas, is Holdherhand’s other route (24 October, 20 Discipline / 31 Holy). He calls its first half weak.

Common mistakes

  • Running pure damage over time with no single-target spell.
  • Chasing big damage numbers on high Heroic while ignoring health, damage reduction and the shield.
  • Taking area upgrades past room size.
  • Over-upgrading the Kelp luck necklace.

What we have not verified

We have not played these builds. Priest has about 12 public builds on asbuilds.app with low view counts, against 22 for Rogue, and Holdherhand’s Endless video had no transcript. Build pages show tree totals only. No source states a game version. Legendary amulet names and the PvP set bonus are player-reported.
