An absorption upgrade can keep raising Ice Barrier’s calculated strength after the shield has reached its limit. The limit applies to the shield you can hold. Aethus’s 1 November 2026 v0.134.0 changelog sets out how that shield behaves:

  • Capacity: Ice Barrier cannot exceed your maximum health, however much its absorption increases.
  • Replacement: a fresh barrier replaces the old barrier’s remainder, instead of adding to it.
  • Party sharing: barriers supplied by party members use the same cap.

This explains the 3 November exchange in which Noblese asked why more upgrades still appeared and uNho pointed to the patch cap. An absorption offer can change a spell value without granting more shield capacity.

Ice Barrier tooltip shared by Noblese in the Mage channel on 3 November 2026. It shows 135 absorption, 63% of maximum health, and a 21-second cooldown. The shield’s separate maximum-health cap is explained below.

Absorption and maximum health are different numbers

The current v0.139.2 rank-I card, in its unmodified Mage context of 215 maximum health, describes a 135-damage shield, displayed as 63% of maximum health. It also says the spell casts again once the shield breaks. That card is below the health cap, leaving room for absorption increases before the ceiling is reached.

Improved Ice Barrier’s three talent ranks increase absorption by 20%, 40% and 60%. These talent ranks change absorption; they do not increase maximum health. When evaluating that talent or an absorption card, check how close your present shield is to the cap before assigning value to the increase.

A worked example of the limit

Assume a character has 500 maximum health. These illustrative values show the rules in arithmetic:

SituationShield held afterward
A fresh barrier would absorb 350350, below the 500 cap
A fresh barrier would absorb 650500, limited by maximum health
200 shield remains, then a fresh 350 barrier arrives350, because the new barrier replaces the remainder

In the second row, increasing the calculated absorption from 650 to 750 still leaves 500 shield. In the third, the result is not 550. A party member supplying the fresh barrier does not open a second allowance.

What to compare on the card screen

  1. Check your current maximum health and Ice Barrier absorption together. Recheck after health changes, since the ceiling is tied to that health total.
  2. If absorption is below the ceiling, an absorption increase can move the shield toward it. If it already reaches the ceiling, raising absorption alone cannot increase the amount held.
  3. Read which property the card changes. Shield size and how soon protection returns after breaking answer different survival needs; the absorption cap alone does not rank every offer.

What changes for a Mage party

Plan around the shield that remains and who supplies the replacement. Several Mages do not provide several independent Ice Barrier pools on the same character. The older community routes for The Insane and The Old Gods Have No Friends use Mage protection as part of their survival plan; apply the shared cap when assessing that protection, then consider the party’s control, healing and movement separately.
